Insidious 3 marks the end of the highly successful Insidious trilogy, but as I mentioned above, is also the beginning as it is the prequel to the two previous movies.
As usual I’ll write a quick synopsis of the movie whilst trying not to spoil it for you, so that you can get a feel for the movie, and decide for yourself whether it is your cup of tea or not.
The movie starts out with teenager Quinn Brenner, played by the gorgeous Stefanie Scott, who consults our well known and beloved psychic, Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye. Quinn besieges Elise to help her contact her deceased mother. Elise at first refuses due to personal reasons, but then feels sorry for Quinn and tries to contact Quinn’s mother for her. Elise immediately detects an evil force, and tells Quinn to not attempt to contact her mother on her own again.
As is usual course for movies like this, Quinn naturally defies Elise’s order, and tries to contact her mother on her own. After trying to contact her mother again, Quinn starts hearing strange noises, but believes it is her mother trying to contact her.
From here on everything escalates dramatically, and Quinn is attacked and captured by the evil entity. Quinn’s father finds Elise and asks her to help him. Elise then goes into the further on her own, to battle the evil entity and rescue Quinn.
While it is good to have a conclusion to a movie series such as this, I am personally not a fan of ending it with a prequel. I am especially not a fan of making the third movie in a trilogy a prequel. I find that it really spoils the series for me, and is very anti-climatic. The plus side of making a prequel to the series is that it gives a more depth to the original story, helps us learn more about the characters and their individual histories.
For me the movie could have been better, but I have also seen worse. I recommend this movie for anyone starting off with the Insidious trilogy, considering it is a prequel. You’ll be able to enjoy the first two movies more, if you have a good idea of the background of the characters.
I give it a 5/10
Here is a trailer for the movie, so you can give it a gander and see for yourself whether it is something you want to watch.
