Punk–a scene for the cold, bold, young, and the old is seeing a resurgence of sorts. The South African band, The Man Motels, brings forth their own offerings of controlled chaos on their highly anticipated EP: Dead Nature due for release on 28 July.
The 4-song EP from the Stellenbosch-based band has all the hallmarks of a fantastic punk album. With its clash of symbols, machine-gun drumming and saucy solos, Dead Nature leaves you reaching for your patch-jacket like you’re embracing anarchy for the very first time. Lyrically, the album departs from your standard drunk/drug punk fodder and instead tells tales of the human condition and analyses the daily interactions of our mundane existence.
With every playthrough of the EP, the adrenaline coursed through my veins. I felt the uncontrollable urge to raise my fist to the sky and flail my limbs as The Fever took hold. Up-tempo and immensely talented, this passionate driven the trio made up of Garrith Holloway (Guitar & Lead Vocals), Pierre Horne (Drums/Percussion) and Divan Putter (Bass & Backing Vocals) bring the fury with this latest release.

This EP—the first released in collaboration with Divan, who is standing in for resident bassist Lyle Aspelin—showcases a fresh sound that defies the norm. Their brand of personal song-writing adds a fervor that hooks you with every top-tapping jam.
As to what inspired Dead Nature, the band stated; “We just want to continue releasing music which we stand by. Music which is hard-hitting and raw. This is our sound; we choose not to conform to what’s “hot or not” on the scene right now. “
Their new video for the single, “The Fever” is crammed full of an energy so raucous it’ll leave you foaming at the mouth!
“The approach is always to write music which shows elements of ferociousness and electricity. It’s about combining anger with beauty. Music which shakes your core because you can feel that it’s real, and that it’s coming from a deep, dark place. The general structure is written by Garrith, after which the band discusses possible changes or additions.” Was the collective sentiment expressed when the band were asked about the albums inception which is clearly evident in the finished product.
An immaculately produced album that is both crisp and raw–these dudes will be redefining the genre with their electrifying sound and unrivalled ability to get any party rocking. Representing the rage through furious frets, their anthems have a way of resonating with me that leaves one with those angsty punk-rock goosebumps every damn time.
