A wave of nostalgia comes over me every time I hear Coal Chamber. My mind wanders back to a time when all that mattered was the next LAN, the next bong, and the next mission with the rag-tag misfits I called my friends.
Our days were spent in dimly lit rooms, thick with smoke, as nu-metal was cranked at unholy decibels whilst we blew out the brains of our fellow computer compatriots. So when I heard that Coal Chamber, one of the most influential numetal bands of the late 90s and early 00s was making music again, I near shat myself in ecstasy.
Their hate-filled anthems gave me the strength I needed to make it through my life as an outcast. Thumping drums and steady melodic thrash beats are the staple of this quartet and the lyrical content is laden with the angst and seething hatred that fills us all from time to time.
Think I'm crazy? No – “ME LOCO!—
It’s their first album in 12 years and it couldn't come at a better time. With the movement having lost Wayne Static earlier this year, things were looking bad for my favourite, hateful genre. So it's with great pleasure that I inform you of Rivals [2015] and to put it in Dez Farana's words “you don't understand the gravity of the situation!—
Released on Napalm records, it's sure to delight both old fans and new. Its maniacal fading and excellent use of distortion sets them apart from the hordes of juveniles wailing behind microphones, sullying the most important message behind metal — Power!
Comprised of Miguel Rascón (Guitars), Mike Cox (Drums), Nadja Peulen (Bass) and Dez Farana (Vocals), their discography consists of 4 albums and is a must-listen for anyone who considers themselves a member of generation X.
As someone who clings to their childhood in an attempt to relive a better time, this new album does just that. It picks up right where they left off with a swift kick in the teeth! I owe you nothing and therefore implore you to listen to “I.O.U Nothing— if you don't believe me.
Coffin kids unite! Air punch the fuck out of something and get down like James Brown cause this one is an absolute rager!
Hit them up on social media and spread the love of malice music!
