This review is a little late to the party, but I feel that it would appeal to a few of you on here.
Currently in its 2nd season, iZombie has been hailed as the new Buffy or Veronica Mars (possibly because it’s actually made by the same people as Veronica Mars), with a strong female protagonist, an evil corporation, and a “Spike” like arch nemesis.
Based in the present day, Liv is a promising student doctor who has all her ducks in a row: a gorgeous fiancé, a good job and great friends. She’s quite straight laced, organised and doesn’t tend to go out much, until one day she’s invited to a boat party and her life takes a dramatic turn.
Hopped up on a new drug called Utopium, and buzzing from a new energy drink called Max Rager, the partygoers soon turn feral, with panic and fighting breaking out all over the boat, and Liv being shoved overboard. Waking up in a body bag, with a sudden craving for human brains, Liv discovers she’s a zombie.
In this new take on the age old zombie trope, Liv is able to not only function as a normal human through regular brain eating, but also takes on the last memories and characteristics of her meals. Liv takes a job in the morgue, where she has brains on tap with no need for murder, and soon becomes the local hard-nosed cop’s “psychic” sidekick, helping him to solve the murders of the people she’s eaten.
From there on the storyline not only follows the ongoing battle with the shady Max Rager Corporation, but Liv’s trials of living and loving as a zombie.
Played by the very talented Rose McIver, Liv is sassy, smart and independent. She adapts to each brain with excellent form and chameleons into their personas quite nicely. The story is fast paced, twisty and interesting.
Not particularly gory nor horrifying but a really great take on modern day zombiism.
