Normally I am not a fan of revenge horror, but I have been following this series since the first movie. Considering I have seen the first two movies, I thought I’d watch the latest instalment in this series.
The main character is our victim / heroine from the first movie, Jennifer Hills (played by Sarah Butler). Still suffering from the trauma of her brutal rape, Jennifer is wary of any men. She’s changed her identity several times since the assault, and even moved several times, in order to try and get away from her horrific past but nothing helped. Eventually she reluctantly joined a support group for rape survivors, where she unexpectedly made a friend, Marla.
Marla and Jennifer quickly form a strong bond due to their similar views on getting revenge for themselves, and others. A short while after their friendship blossomed, Jennifer learns of Marla’s tragic death at the hands of Marla’s ex-boyfriend, and rapist. Jennifer pleads the police to bring her friend’s killer to justice, but they let him go free, claiming that there isn’t enough evidence to incarcerate him. Jennifer becomes enraged, and seeks vengeance.
She goes on a rampage, attacking, and brutally killing the rapists who hurt the people in her support group. Enacting bitter-sweet vengeance on these monsters turns her into a monster as well though, and her actions eventually catch up to her.
Personally, I preferred the first two movies. The deaths and revenge enacted in the first two movies were significantly more inventive and brutal. They showed what human beings are capable of when pushed over the edge. To me the third instalment of this series felt more like a weak attempt at trying to ride on the coattails of success of the first two movies, but that they did were too lazy to make a proper movie this time.
I give it a very weak 4/10.
