Two teenage boys unwittingly summon an ancient evil entity known as The Blind One by delving into black magic while trying to escape their mundane lives.
Misleading synopsis is misleading. Deathgasm is far better described as the New Zealand raised love child of Sam Raimi‘s The Evil Dead and Liam Lynch‘s The Pick of Destiny (or maybe This is Spinal Tap sans the documentary style?). Written and Directed by Jason Lei Howden, Deathgasm follows the adventures of metalhead Brodie (Milo Cawthorne) who has been taken in by his ultra-conservative, religious uncle and his family after his druggy mother’s meth binge. He finds a friend in Zakk (James Blake) and a couple of the local D&D nerds and together they start a band (DETHGASM! Because lower case is for pussies). Shit spirals quickly out of control though when Zakk and Brodie decide to track down a metal legend rumoured to be living in their dead-end little town.
Without giving too much away, this horror-comedy really is a little gem. It has it all: fantastic music, great laughs, weed, titties, deadites, demon worshiping cults, titties… you get the picture. The story was predictable and and the plot was wafer-thin, but that’s not why people watch movies like this. The demographic for this pretty clear as well: pot smoking, metal listening kids aged early teens to late twenties. I would really love to have watched this movie the way it was meant to be seen; with a couple friends, a bag of weed and a six-pack. I did still thoroughly enjoy it, but it really made me yearn for my younger years.
This is an A-grade movie probably done on a modest budget considering its humble roots. The acting was a lot better than the forced and fake performances one often gets from similar U.S. flicks and the special effects and cinematography were all top notch. The soundtrack was great fun, and overall the movie was nothing but entertaining. Absolutely recommended to fans of the horror-comedy and kush. Not so much recommended for folks who are looking for a serious or genuinely scary film. Catch a look at the trailer below and as always, decide for yourself.
