To say I’ve been waiting with bated breath for 3Teeth’s 3rd album, METAWAR, is an understatement, to say the least. The 5 piece industrial heavyweights have gone from stride to stride and solidify their status as the bastard children of a forgotten genre—especially now with their latest offering.
METAWAR opens with the haunting “Hyperstition,” a subliminal mind-fuck that edges you toward what’s to come with its eerie goa-esque beat intertwined with a message from our corporate overlords.
Next up is the thundering “AFFLUENZA,” a fast-paced techno-heavy break-beat masterpiece that really gets the blood pumping; hurling you into a world of dimly lit rooms and blaring synthesizers coupled with ferocious guitar and screeching vocals.
EXXXIT is a track that’ll take you back to the good ol’ days of industrial as it sways between a hardened baseline and a mash of grinding guitar that builds to a climax of epic proportions—reminding us that they’re all the same.
AMERICAN LANDFILL is staunch and poignant in its dissection of the microcosm that is 21st century America. If this track doesn’t make you want to punch the proverbial man in the fucking teeth and break something then you belong in the aforementioned landfill. With its raucous chorus, even those of us who don’t reside in the “United” States of America are sure to share the palpable disdain sung about.
PRESIDENT X: Do you vote? I don’t. In South Africa’s political climate the very notion is naive so I can only imagine the idiocy of having to be an American where your choices are a douche and a turd sandwich. This song raises the alarm for the masses with a literal siren…or perhaps a call to those enslaved by an archaic system of white-collar servitude?
Next is ALTAER, my favourite track on the album. This gothic chant sways the hips to and fro and keeps the head banging as it reminds us that self-destruction is liberation through its haunting synthesizer and faded vocals. The slow rhythmic percussion sliding alongside a powerful riff reminds you of the inconsequential nature of daily monotony, so fuck it and give in to the sweet sounds of destruction.
TIME SLAVE is hard, twisting your mind into a fit with its ambient noise as it blares its way into the soundtrack of your life. Clocking in and out with its eerie chorus, it’ll have you snickering every time you see a co-worker casting an eye toward the hour.
Were you born? Do you remember? If not then perhaps BORNLESS is the answer to your questions. This track is pure industrial and will have you tearing at your veins trying to find your humanity as you lose yourself in the music.
It’s hard not to be impressed by the depth and profanity contained in each track, and SURRENDER is no different—down-tempo and serene with just the slightest dash of WAR; it’s another masterpiece on an already brilliant album.
SELL YOUR FACE 2.0 is a remix of a track released in 2015 and even though it’s a rehash, they’ve managed to breathe new life into it whilst still encapsulating the fear-mongering of the past 4 years under Trump. Naturally, it goes without saying that the original and its message were tight to begin with.
BLACKOUT is deeply personal and is sure to strike a chord, be it musically or existentially. Percussion that swoons you as the synthesized mania and soft-spoken echoes of Mincolla’s rants drill their way into your brain, reminding you that there is nothing quite like good ol’ malice music.
The band yet again demonstrates their prowess with the next track, THE FALL. A down-tempo gothic masterpiece that solidifies 3Teeth’s status as the seminal band for any industrial fan, the birth of an entirely new entity as you “wash it all away”.
Finally, a cover…and boy what a cover it is. “PUMPED UP KICKS” is a true example of what it is to make an original song better. Not overly familiar with the original, I took to the cover with ease as it gave me all the familiar sounds a coffin kid craves with an added dose of something funky. The culmination of shrieks woven gave me goosebumps.
The hate, spite, and vitriol spewed forth in this album made we want to explode in a frenzy of dancing and screams that bring sweet release from the monotony of modern music—truly magnificent. 3teeth have blown my fucking mind with every album released and METAWAR is no different.
