Synopsis:
Do real werewolves exist? In the American south legends tell of encounters with a creature that stalks the swamps and bayous. A creature who was here long before the immigrants who settled the region. An ancient evil called the Rougarou. Legends tell of a cannibal tribe of shapeshifters who retreated deep into the forests where they slowly lost touch with their humanity. A tribe who went on to become something far darker; a skinwalker. Now, nearly 400 years since the legend of the Rougarou first began to circulate, people are encountering the creature once again. The truth behind these vicious, horrifying brushes with the unknown will make your blood run cold. Does the Rougarou still stalk the swamps of southern Louisiana? The truth may surprise you…
Small Town Monsters returns with yet another interesting and well-grounded documentary. This time they focus on something even more elusive than aliens or bigfoot, the fabled Rougarou.
The terrifying Rougarou is a creature of Native American and Cajun folklore said to prowl through the swamps of Louisianna. Similar to the werewolf legends, the Rougarou is said to have a human-like body but the head and fur of a dog. Over the centuries there have been many reports of such creatures all across America, but especially in the swamplands.
Seth Breedlove directed this documentary which explores the tales of the Rougarou and is filled with apparent witness testimony. Many of the stories seem quite fantastical due to the nature of the Rougarou folklore, however, when listening to the people who claim to have seen or heard the Rougarou, their conviction makes it hard to dismiss their stories out of hand, despite the even more mystical nature of these creatures than say Bigfoot.
Like most of the Small Town Monsters documentaries, The Howl of the Rougarou doesn’t set out to prove the existence of this legendary cryptid, instead merely presenting the evidence, such as there is, in the form of documented stories and witness testimony.
While the documentary doesn’t present much to refute any of the claims or present much in the line of scepticism, the documentary never feels biased one way or the other. As always, it is this balance and lack of sensationalism that makes the Small Town Monsters documentaries such a pleasure to watch.
A well-paced and interesting documentary that presents the stories and leaves it up to the audience to decide whether or not the Rougarou could exist. Is there a menacing cryptid hiding out in the swamps or is it a cursed individual to be pitied? You’ll need to decide that for yourself.
