Synopsis
A small-time crook, Alkis Vidalis, agrees to star in a viral video, which can restore the public image of a prominent businessman. Alkis realizes he is supposed to be killed after creating the video and must escape.
Do It Yourself begins with Alkis Vidalis sitting in front of a bed, badly beaten and nervous, creating what we believe is a homemade video accepting responsibility for the death of mob leader Josheph Forkou. As the video finishes, we find out it was a video created in a porn studio. The video was made to clear the name of Daniel Bezerianos (Christos Loulis), a ruthless businessman who will resort to any means necessary to protect his interests.
Alkis also plays the part of the narrator in the film, and begins by explaining that he now realizes their intent is to kill him and upload the video. Alkis provides just enough information to make the audience think, “Oh. OK. I understand this more. But wait…what is going on? I am confused.” By the end of the movie, it is clear because it is played back with a full view of what happened and with more details of the events, but it was too little too late by that time.
Overall, this movie just wasn’t for me. Maybe it was the fact that Alkis did not seem to have the skills needed to survive and mostly got out of situations because of his luck. Maybe it was the plot twists and how many there were. Maybe it was simply the fact that it was subtitled and I could not always follow the plot twists right away. Maybe it was all of those. Whatever it was, I just simply did not enjoy the movie as much as I hoped I would enjoy a movie about a man fighting for his life inside a porn studio. I saw little reason for him to be in a porn studio except for comedic effect, which did not really happen strongly enough in the film.
